Due to South Africa’s high poverty levels, many bright young individuals have a bleak future regarding job opportunities, let alone getting into a career of their choice. Transport, technology, and after school education programs are often taken for granted here, but a lack of any of these factors present massive challenges that can often prevent young people from reaching their goals. This year we have selected Zaza, passionate young woman, for our Young Adult Development Program. We would like to help her reach her dream of becoming a spa therapist. She has proven to be a helpful member of the Paterson community in always offering to assist with community projects, without any expectations or reservations.
Our hope here is to raise funds in an effort to pay for Zaza to be able to attend the Elizabeth Beauty School in Port Elizabeth, allowing her to attend weekend courses throughout the year and giving her a chance to take control of her future. She will start with massage courses, since there is the possibility for business within the volunteer program at the Shamwari Conservation Experience. Spa treatments are in high demand with volunteers, but they are far from facilities and require time for travel. Zaza will be able to gain practical experience at higher convenience to volunteers, allowing them to help with more issues around the conservation. We aim to get Zaza through all of the massage courses and then move on to nail and face treatments. She will also look into doing African hair braiding on the side, to help with extra income for purchasing the products for the treatments.
Many young people in poor communities have the potential to be great, but have no support system and, unfortunately, end up stuck and unable to realize their full potential. Donations to projects, such as this one, will help more than you could ever imagine; we just have to find those individuals and connect them with the right people and support systems.
